Shakespeare to Winehouse

Since its first car was produced in 1935, Jaguar has become an iconic British brand that has made its mark on the motoring world with distinctly beautiful design and uncompromising performance. From the launch of the XK120 in the 1940s, the creation of the legendary E-TYPE in 1961, and the world’s fastest car XJ220 in 1992, right through to the XF, F-TYPE, F-PACE and I-PACE today, the Jaguar DNA is instantly recognisable.

Equally recognisable British icons are names like Shakespeare, Dickens, The Beatles and Beckham - just some of the faces found at the National Portrait Gallery London, which features the world’s most extensive collection of portraits. While the gallery undergoes its largest renovation in 125 years, 80 of these portraits will be travelling to Australia for an exclusive exhibition in 2022.

Jaguar is proud to partner with the Shakespeare to Winehouse exhibition, committed to cultivating and nurturing Australia’s cultural life and enabling Australians to personally experience some of the most important icons of British culture. Alongside the famous faces of Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, David Bowie and Ed Sheeran, the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE will have a residency at the entrance to the gallery, representing the future of motoring and next-generation British design.

Rather than a chronological display, the exhibition is focused on six interrelated themes of Fame, Power, Love and Loss, Identity, Innovation, and Self, demonstrating how defining characteristics of portraiture have been reinterpreted and reimagined by artists across time, and showing how portraits can share the same language despite being created centuries apart – another characteristic synonymous with Jaguar design heritage and evolution.

With a collection of over three thousand portraits of remarkable Australians, housed in a purpose-built, award- winning building in the heart of Canberra’s cultural precinct, the National Portrait Gallery reflects the evolving face of the nation, with all its diversity, history, heart and complexity. The contemporary elegance of the Gallery lends itself to showcasing Jaguar’s commitment to excellence in design and extraordinary spaces.

This incredible exhibition, called ‘Shakespeare to Winehouse: Icons from the National Portrait Gallery, London’, opens 12 March and runs until 17 July at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
